HOUSEHOLD WORK UNFOLDS, STRETCHES AND PRESSES TO BOLD DIMENSIONS WITH NEW THEATRICAL PIECE
-Domestic Science Dub Recounts The Pioneering Legacy Of Caribbean Domestics In Canada-

Toronto, June 20, 2007

Full Stride Productions is pleased to announce the debut of Domestic Science Dub, a musical and theatrical homage to Canada’s Caribbean domestic workers.

Domestic Science Dub, which shines a spotlight on domestics who continue to leave an indelible mark Canada’s economy, is taking place at the Oakwood Village Library from June 21st to June 24th, 2007.

Domestic Science Dub follows the lives of Josephine, Ms Sophisticat, Dawn, and Lizzy, four young Jamaican women coming of age when Domestic Science programs converged on the Caribbean to mobilize overseas labour. The play starts with the four girls dreaming about “foreign” in Ms. Icylda’s “big yard” and tracks them to their respective domestic assignments after they land in Canada.

“Domestic Science Dub celebrates the countless nannies, maids and other domestics who have migrated to Canada from Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean since the 1950’s”, says Michael St. George, who produced and co- wrote the play. “These women carried families and legacies on their back equal in weight to the toiling they did on a daily basis – they are unsung heroes who continue to drive our economies and societies here and in the Caribbean.”

From the heart-wrench of splitting up families to the cold reality of employee abuse, the play captures all the colours of Canada’s domestic worker lives as lived with determination, courage, candour and levity. Domestic Science Dub is directed by Lucy Hamlet and co-written by Michael St. George, Sylvia Harrison and Neville Johnson. Alrick Green, Sashane Needham and Jeanine Charles are among the cast.

The Oakwood Village Library is located at 341 Oakwood Avenue (at Rogers). Show times are: 7pm from June 21-23 and at 4pm on June 24, which will be free for seniors in honour of Senior Citizens Month.
